Asynchronous:
This kind of distance education is characterized by an emphasis on
"learning on demand" or "as needed communication" between
students and faculty from multiple locations at times convenient to participants.
Synchronous:
This form of distance education entails the use of live, two-way communication
among and/or between students and faculty in a scheduled or "fixed"
point(s) of time(s), much like classroom-based instruction.
Course Description:
Introduction to planning and implementation of the operations of a small
business as well as remedial action for small business problems. Topics
covered include legal considerations, financial and administrative control,
supervision and personnel, site selection, competition, sales promotion and
marketing.
Required Textbook & Materials:
Mariotti, Entrepreneurship : Starting and
Operating a Small Business from Prentice Hall and subscription to Entrepreneurship
magazine—online or in print. It may also be necessary to purchase an
access code for material on the WebCt site.
Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Recognize
new opportunities for business ventures.
- Describe
how to take a new concept from initial idea to final execution.
- Assess
the feasibility of a proposed business
- Identify
the competitive advantages an entrepreneur has over an entrenched business
- Demonstrate
an understanding of the importance of a marketing strategy and its components
- Demonstrate
an understanding of the importance of excellent customer service
- Explain
the importance of tracking fixed and variable costs for financial success
- Create
an income statement
- Explain
the difference between debt and equity financing
- Explain
the importance and methodology of tracking cash flow
- Describe
the differences among potential legal structures and the advantages and
disadvantages of each
- Demonstrate
an understanding of the importance of effective leadership and the basics
of human resource management
- Demonstrate an understanding of methods for growing
your business and investing for a secure future
Methods of Instruction:
Online – Distance Learning Students are required to engage in the following
interaction(s) for successful completion of this course:
Students will participate several times each week in
discussions online facilitated by use of the courses website. Discussions
will focus on articles from current issues of Entrepreneurship and other
periodicals, case studies, and other resources to be named; therefore, students
will have reading assignments in such publications as well as their text. Any
projects or assignments will be turned in electronically. Exams will be taken
online and include both objective as well as short answer essay questions.
