COURSE DESCRIPTION & MISSION:
Human Resource Management refers to the policies and procedures needed to carry out the people aspects of management. The course focuses on the process of hiring, developing, motivating, and evaluating employees to achieve organizational goals. This includes managing the following policies and practices: job analyses, labor needs, employee recruiting, selection, orientation and training; compensation benefits programs, performance appraisal processes, counseling and disciplining procedures. Human Resource Managers are also responsible for equal opportunity employment practices; affirmative action and employee health & safety programs; facilitating grievance procedures; and managing labor relations.
REQUIRED TEXTS:
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, Textbook: 12th edition, Mathis & Jackson, South-Western College Publishing, © 2008. An access code is required for this course.
SUPPLEMENTAL READING:
Some supplemental articles may be referred to or provided by instructor, and students will be asked to comment on them.
ON-LINE COMMUNICATION POLICY:
Generally I will log in three times per week, to check e-mail, bulletin board postings & questions.
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
It is my intent to introduce you to a variety of teaching methods through distance learning in order to maximize your learning experience. Additionally, I hope you will become comfortable and potentially at ease with some of the methods. The methods include:
· Weekly Quizzes/Bulletin Boards Discussions
· Unit Exams/Case Studies
All unit exams, quizzes and case assignment due dates are posted on the course's Calendar. However, I reserve the right to change or modify assignments as needed. All changes will be posted at least a week in advance, via a note on the Homepage, or Bulletin board and/or e-mail.
QUIZZES (20%)
You will be required to take a short quiz that is based exclusively on the assigned chapter reading. It is your responsibility to remain abreast of all calendar assignments and the due dates. Quizzes will only be available during the week of the reading assignment. Although you may not want to miss a chapter quiz, I realize that occasionally some extenuating circumstance will keep you from completing the quiz. Since our time this semester is limited and we have a lot of area to cover, you will be allowed a total of 4 non-questionable missed quizzes. Translation: 4 lowest grades will be dropped for calculation of final grade. However, keep in mind that the information on the quizzes is review for the Unit Exams, so it is to your benefit to take all weekly quizzes.
BULLETIN BOARD DISCUSSION (10%)
A portion of our class time will be spent processing textbook reading assignments. This processing will occur normally through some form of class interactive activity. The activities are a significant piece of your learning and are specifically designed to connect your textbook reading. There will be topics posted to the Bulletin Board. You will be required to post at least 1 appropriate response to the discussion topic and respond to at least 1 of your classmates' postings to receive full credit (10 points) for the topic discussion. Your initial posting and the response to a classmates' posting should occur on different days. This allows you to read and respond to a greater number of students' postings. I will be reading the bulletin board responses regularly & responding as needed. Students are expected to read all bulletin board postings for a particular topic & you are strongly encouraged to post responses to create active dialogue.
WRITING ASSIGNMENTS (20%)
Each chapter concludes with a summary, review & discussion questions, terms to know, and a case study. Generally, a weekly writing assignment will be extracted from the case studies.
ALL ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE POSTED WITH A DUE DATE. Be sure to reference your WebCT Calendar & Weekly Assignments. I GENERALLY DO NOT ACCEPT LATE ASSIGNMENTS. All assignments must be submitted through the assignment feature and NOT VIA E-MAIL.
UNIT EXAMS (50%)
The text has 5 distinct sections, which I refer to as UNITS. Within each unit there are several chapters we will be covering. At the conclusion of each unit there will be an exam based on the chapters covered in that unit. You are responsible for taking all 5 unit exams during the designated time frames. Be sure to consult your calendar for dates. There are no make-ups or retakes of unit exams. You will receive an 'F' grade for a missed unit exam.
EXPECTATIONS FOR CLASS PARTICIPATION:
Your success in this course will rely heavily on your interactive participation with the on-line learning tools and methods of instruction. It will be your sole responsibility to meet the posted deadlines & requirements for all assignments. Students who do not participate weekly and MISS ANY 3 CONSECUTIVE ASSIGNMENTS, MAY RECEIVE AN 'AW' (excessive absences) AS A FINAL GRADE FOR THIS COURSE. Please be aware that LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
DOCUMENTED DISABILITIES:
Holyoke Community College is committed to full inclusion of all students. Students who, by nature of a documented disability, require special accommodations should let me know immediately. Students may also speak with the Office for Students with Disabilities at 552-2417 to request the appropriate accommodations. Your immediate attention to these arrangements is necessary to insure a positive learning experience.
Withdrawing from Class:
Sometimes it is necessary for a student to withdraw from an online course. If that should become necessary, the student should complete the withdrawal form located at http://webtide.hccdl.org - Star 3. The form can be e-mailed to the Dean of Distance Education. Students who do not participate, but fail to formally withdraw from course, may receive an Administrative Withdrawal grade from instructor.
Academic Integrity Policy
Please refer to the E-Institute site at http://webtide.hccdl.org - under Star 3. Every student must produce their own work. This policy explains the implication of submitting work other than that which is self-produced.
GOOD LUCK !
