Course Objectives
This course is
intended to provide the student with an introduction to major themes and trends
in United States History from Reconstruction to the present day. The student
will be able to identify the main issues, events, and important people in
United States History as well as assess how these issues, events, and people
have impacted the U.S. and the world in general.
Methodology
Classes will be
comprised of online materials, online comments/questions/discussions,
participation and exams.
It is
imperative that you prepare for classes by reading the assignments, both
online and in the book, before that chapter will be discussed. Often,
class discussion will be based on the assigned readings. In order to
participate, you must be prepared. The exams will be based on a mixture of
assigned readings and online course material.
Writing:
This course
requires you to think and write meaningfully and intensively. Over the course
of the semester you will be given three exams. These will be essay exams
(typed, double-spaced, 12 font). They will be due on the dates listed in the
course schedule (which is subject to change – any changes will be announced).
Failure to hand in ANY assignment on time will result in an F, no
exceptions. You will be given a generous amount of time to complete your
assignments. Due to this policy the instructor reserves the right to issue an
AW to a student at anytime during the course.
Exams:
Over the course
of the semester there will be three exams.
Grading:
Exam #1: 25% Classroom
Participation & Attendance: 25%
Exam #2: 25% Exam
#3: 25%
Due Dates:
All assignments
are due on the days specified on the schedule. Assignments that are late are
given an F, no exceptions.
Attendance:
Your attendance
is expected during every class meeting. For the purposes of this online
course, a grade of AW will be given if you have not posted something on the
bulletin board or contacted me in three class meetings. Three class meetings equal
one week for online purposes. I will be logging in on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays to review your progress and to answer any questions.
Plagiarism:
There is an
absolute zero tolerance policy when it comes to cheating or plagiarism of any
kind. Any student caught plagiarizing will be reported to the Dean’s Office.
Plagiarism is a serious offence and will be dealt with harshly and in
accordance with the Student Discipline Policy.
Communication, Interaction, and Online
Discussion Group:
I will check
email at least three times per week. Response time should be within 24 hours
of the time of receipt. I do not check my email on the weekends.
Your best
option for contacting me is via email. My office hours are by appointment.
As noted above,
you are expected to log in and post a relevant comment a minimum of three times
per week. There is an expectation that all students will take an active role
in their own learning. I will actively monitor and participate in the
discussion group. I may also utilize group emails as a tool to share
information, questions, concerns and new information.
I will post
discussion questions each week, related to the chapters we are covering. You
are also encouraged to pose discussion questions. You are required to
contribute quality comments and questions that have substance in order to earn
a participation grade.
