Asynchronous Course
Asynchronous:
This kind of distance education is characterized by an emphasis on "learning on demand" or "as needed communication" between students and faculty from multiple locations at times convenient to participants.
Synchronous:
This form of distance education entails the use of live, two-way communication among and/or between students and faculty in a scheduled or "fixed" point(s) of time(s), much like classroom-based instruction.
Course Description:
The exploration of environmental geology, an applied science, will include the fundamentals of geologic processes and the Earth’s natural resources, with an emphasis on the human interaction within the geologic environment. Lecture topics included in this course: general overview of rocks and minerals, geologic hazards (e.g., earthquakes, volcanoes, mass wasting, flooding), soil formation and documentation, geologic landscapes (e.g., glacial deposits, lava flows, and floodplains), groundwater, waste management, land-use planning and current events in geology. Laboratories exercises, which are intended to reinforce the lecture topics, will include: field visits to local geologic points of interest, computer simulations, and hands-on investigations.
Required Textbook & Materials:
Pipkin, Bernard, and Trent, D. 2008. Geology and the Environmental, 5th edition
Laurin, Jamie. 2008. Geology for the Environmental Sciences
Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: Identify the common rocks and minerals found in the Connecticut Valley Identify the major landforms associated with the New England landscape Document soils using filed and laboratory techniques Explain the major concepts and field techniques used in the field of hydrogeology
Methods of Instruction:
Online Distance Learning
