Course Description: From the course catalog… “This course may focus chronologically on such American writers as Eliot, Frost, Hemingway, Faulkner, and O'Neill; or, it may be organized thematically on topics such as the city in literature (Yezierska, Wharton, Dreiser, Crane, James); pioneers and immigrants (Cather, Rolvaag, Curran, Mangione); small town (Anderson, Robinson, Lewis, Cheever, Carver); dissonant voices (Baldwin, Kerouac, Cummings, Miller, Eliot); or Southern voices (Faulkner, Glasgow, O'Connor, Williams, Mason, Gaines).Prerequisite: ENG 102”
In my words…This class offers students the chance to become familiar with some of the greatest writers of American Literature, from 1865 to the present day. Works studied will be given an historical context, allowing students anunderstand their relevance, not only during the time in which they were written, but also to today’s America.
Coursework includes reading, short writing exercises, quizzes, discussion via the WebCT discussion board, two essays, and a final.

To become familiar with some of the great works of American Literature from 1865 to the present day
To understand the historical context within which these works were written

Students are required to engage in the following interaction(s) for successful completion of this course:
Students must complete all of the scheduled readings, do all the writing exercises assigned, participate in the discussion board, and submit papers and quizzes according to the schedule. This course is NOT self-paced. Unless otherwise specified, all discussions must be concluded by by 5 p.m. on the Friday of each week and all other assignments must be completed by 10 p.m. on the Sunday of each week.
