Course Description:

English 102 “covers the ability to communicate with others, to think critically, and to comprehend literary works.  The emphasis is on writing critically about fiction, poetry, and drama.  Frequent short essays are assigned, amounting to a total of approximately three thousand words.”

Prerequisite – Grade of C- or higher in English 101

Required Textbook & Materials:  Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama and Writing. Compact Interactive Edition. Sixth Edition. By X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia.  Pearson/Longman.  2009. With access codes for MyCompLab and MyLiteratureLab

*You must purchase the specially priced bundled package from the HCC bookstore because it contains access codes for software that you will need to complete course assignments.* Purchasing access to this software separately will be much more expensive.

You must log into and begin working on the course during the first week of instruction to be considered an active student.  If you are not actively working on the course by the end of the first week of instruction, you will be withdrawn.

Course Objectives:

Reading:  Students should be able to

  • comprehend works of poetry, fiction, and drama and become more aware of the human issues and points of view expressed in these forms;
  • respond analytically to works of literature.

Writing:  Students should be able to produce formal analytical essays that

  • address literary elements (such as character, theme, setting, etc.) with focus and insight;
  • contain a thesis and supporting paragraphs;
  • are clear, organized, and well-developed;
  • appropriately incorporate quotations and examples from literary sources;
  • are grammatically correct;
  • are appropriately formatted and presented.

  • Submit formal essays online through companion software
  • Submit exercise responses through MyLiteratureLab companion software
  • Participate in peer review process for assigned essay drafts
