Principles of Economics I: ECN 102

Course Description: An introduction to Microeconomics, concerned how the economic system of American capitalism determines what products and services are produced, how they are produced and the way in which their benefits are distributed. Included are a detailed analysis of the tools of supply and demand, the operation of industries with different characteristics, and the determination of wages. Focus is placed on understanding public policy designed to effect the operation of the market system.

 

Course Objective: The course is designed for understanding of

1.       The law of supply and demand and other basic economic concepts

2.       The working of American economic system in general

3.       Elasticity of demand and supply

4.       Production and cost analysis

5.       Monopoly, monopolistic competition, oligopoly and antitrust regulations

6.      International trade and economic development

3.       Movie “Trading Places” staring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. Parts of it are on You Tube. For full length you may borrow it from a friend or from your local library. This 1983 movie is not readily available.

Method

 

Students are required to read the assigned chapters of the textbook, submit assignments, write term paper and take exams

 

Assignments

1.       All assignments are listed below. Read these and the due dates carefully. Additional assignments may be posted in the Discussion Area

2.       Email assignments must be submitted via email, no attachment except the term paper

3.       Discussion Area assignments must be done in the Discussion Area

Exams

1.       Quiz 1 (assignment # 1) to be taken between September 4 & 9

2.       Three Online Exams: Two exams (Exam 1 & Exam 2) during the semester and one final.

3.       Each of the first two exams will be given twice during the semester (Exam 1A, Exam 1B and Exam 2A, Exam 2B). The higher scores will be counted toward the final grade i.e. higher scores of either Exam 1A, given on 10/13/07 or higher scores of Exam 1B, given on 10/14/07 will be counted toward the final. Similarly, higher scores of Exams 2A or 2B, given on 11/10/07 and 11/11/07 respectively will be counted toward the final grade. These exams will not be the same but similar. Simply, it means that you will have two chances for each of these two exams. These exams will be available for 24 hours

4.       Final Exam. Unlike the above exams final exam will be given only once and will be available for 48 hours to be taken on 12/17/07 and 12/18/07 i.e. you will have only one chance to take final exam.

5.       All the Exams will be of two hours duration.

6.       Students should take chapter’s online quizzes by clicking Course Content and Online Quiz. Theses are practice, not required quizzes with no credit and time limit. Do not email the result to the instructor

Internet Activities:

1.       All email and bulletin board assignments are numbered. It keeps you in loop (thread) of the topic. You must write assignment # in the subject box when submitting assignment

2.       I will comment only to those assignments that receive less than 50% marks

3.       Assignment must be submitted within the assigned week i.e. within start and end dates, not before the start of the week and not after the end of the week.

4.       Generally, week starts Monday morning and ends Sunday night, but not always. Therefore, it is very important that you keep your own calendar for the exams and assignments due dates. There will be no reminders. Mode of Assignment Submission. Assignments are numbered and designated for email submission or discussion, except challenge question and extra credit book review assignments

 

Email Assignments: These assignments must be submitted via email.

 

Discussion Assignments: These assignments must be discussed in the Discussion Area.

This segment of the course is particularly important for expressing your view on the topic and textbook material. The discussion is asynchronous i.e. anywhere, any time within the assignment period. This is a threaded discussion, not a “live” chat. Level and quality of participation matter. I will monitor, facilitate and participate in discussions, when and if needed. Students have to participate at least three times on a given discussion topic as follows:

 

1st Posting:

a)       State how the topic relates to you.

b)       How it may help in understanding aspect of economics you studied so far?

c)       State your position for or against the issue.

2nd Posting:

a)       Challenging the opposing point of view(s)

b)       Cite your experience, observation, readings etc. to support your point of view

3rd Posting:

a)       Summarizing and defending your position or agreeing to the position taken by other(s). In either case, you must support your argument with some data/references
