NOT MATTER WHEN YOU LOG IN. THERE ARE NO STANDARD MEETING TIMES FOR THIS
COURSE.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course takes a critical look at
the role of mass media in American society and broadly examines their
development, organizational structure and impact. Students will engage in a
study of newspapers, magazines, radio, film, television, the Internet and the
music industry from a consumer’s point of view and will consider the media’s
place and role in a democracy.
REQUIRED TEXT The
Media in Your Life (4th edition) by Jean Folkerts and Stephen Lacy (available at the Campus Bookstore or
as an e-book).
COMMUNICATION
· Since
we do not communicate face-to-face in this course, it is important that you
carefully read the announcements and/or instructions posted on the homepage.
· I
will log in approximately three to four times a week, including weekends, to
check emails and discussion postings. Please use the email tool within WebCT
for regular contact.
OUTCOMES
· To
understand the history, development and evolution of various communication
technologies
· To
understand how media organizations are structured
· To
be more aware of the impact of media on individuals and society
· To be able to recognize the persuasive
techniques used in advertising
COURSE POLICIES

ATTENDANCE:
THIS IS NOT A SELF-PACED COURSE. Your attendance
will be monitored, and you will be expected log in at least once a week.
Failure to log in at least once a week may result in dismissal from the course
and a grade of "AW" (administrative withdrawal). Ultimately, however,
it is your responsibility to withdraw from the course if you stop attending.
Failure to do so could result in an "F" for the course. Do not assume
you will be automatically withdrawn.
· DEADLINES: To do well in this course you must meet all deadlines. In general
you will have one full week to complete homework assignments and quizzes. I do
not expect you to understand and remember absolutely everything you read, but
you should use the supplemental learning tools available online to help
reinforce each chapter (i.e. crossword puzzles & flashcards).You do not
have to complete any other assignments above and beyond what is indicated on
the weekly schedule.

MAKE-UP WORK:
There will be NO MAKE-UP quizzes or exams in this
course. Please keep up with the course schedule..
