COMMUNICATION POLICY:

REQUIRED TEXTS:  Microsoft Office EXCEL 2007 Comprehensive Concepts and Techniques, Shelly Cashman Quasney, Course Technology, 2008, ISBN 1-4188-4344-X.  Used books may have a different ISBN #.

SOFTWARE:  This course and book uses Microsoft Excel 2007.  If you are using a lower version, you will have to be flexible when completing your homework, as you will not have all the new features added to v2007.  Feel free to make whatever adjustments you need in order to complete the work.  ON CAMPUS:  In the Kittredge Building, Microsoft Excel 2007 is installed; in other buildings on campus, Microsoft 2003 is installed.  Therefore, if you plan to work in a building other than Kittredge on campus or from home and have an earlier version of Excel, make sure you save your file as an Excel 97-2003 file before you leave the classroom.  The software package called “Microsoft Works” is not an acceptable substitute for Microsoft Excel in this course and may not be used to complete the course requirements.

COLLABORATION

You are not allowed to collaborate with other students when completing tests, to copy other student’s homework, or to use the textbook when completing your exams. 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course covers all aspects of spreadsheets using an integrated software package which combines a large, advanced electronic worksheet with state‑of‑the‑art graphics and database management capacity, beginning with building a basic worksheet and progressing through the major commands and advanced features of the software package.    3 credit hrs.

 

(INSTRUCTOR’S NOTE:  It is expected that the student has a basic working knowledge of a Windows-based PC.)   Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be eligible to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Core Exam in Excel which is administered by the College for an additional fee.                                                                        

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

1.         Understand basic microcomputer concepts including utilization of Windows for program and file management.

 

2.         Apply spreadsheet software concepts to business and practical situations regardless of academic background or business experience.

 

3.         Design and create basic worksheets including planning, entering data, formatting, copying, saving files, retrieving, editing, printing, and using menus and toolbars.

 

4.         Write formulas and use functions, use what-if analysis and web queries to more efficiently utilize the power of the software.

 

5.                  Create graphs to visually present the output of the worksheet.  Use the draw feature to create and modify lines, objects and 3D shapes.

 

6.         Apply financial functions and data tables to analyze financial data.

 

7.                  Utilize the spreadsheet software for database operations including entering data, sorting, searching, filtering, extracting information and printing reports.  Use database functions and Pivot Tables and Charts.

 

8.                  Use Object Linking and Embedding to integrate Excel worksheets into other software applications such as Word, Access and PowerPoint.

 

9.                  Use advanced techniques such as formula auditing, consolidation and data validation.

 

10.              Attain a level of proficiency to successfully pass the Microsoft Office Specialist test in Excel.

 

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:  ONLINE – DISTANCE LEARNING.  The course textbook is the source of all information necessary to complete the homework and tests.  The student is expected to complete reading assignments and in-chapter tutorials from the course text, hands-on exercises from the end of the Projects, and optional online supplementary assignments. There are no synchronous or on-site requirements for this course.

METHODS OF EVALUATION:  Tests, quizzes, homework exercises, final exam or project.
