There are no synchronous or on-site requirements for this course.

Communication Policy: Communication is through the WebCT Private Mail Tool in the online course. I will log in Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evenings to answer e-mail questions.

Course Description: An introductory, hands-on course designed to provide an overview of microcomputer hardware and software currently available and to provide hands on exposure to internet, email, operating system, word processing, spreadsheets, database and graphic application. Pre-requisite BUS105 or equivalent. 3 credits.

Course Objectives:

1. Learn to identify and implement the elements of the computer systems process
2. Learn the fundamental aspects of computer hardware
3. Learn the fundamental commands of computer software
4. Learn to efficiently research information using the Internet
5. Learn to operate and organize email messages and attachments
6. Learn how to integrate the Microsoft Office software applications
7. Learn to create documents using word processing and desktop publishing techniques
8. Learn to problem solve by designing effective spreadsheets
9. Learn to construct multimedia and hypermedia presentations
10. Learn how to design systems and retrieve information with database applications

Required Textbook & Materials:

·         Text - Office 2007, Introductory Concepts and Techniques, Windows XP Edition, Shelly Cashman Series, Shelly Cashman Vermaat, Thomson Course Technology, 978-1-4188-4327-4 Available from HCC Bookstore.

·         Software - Microsoft Office 2007, containing Word, PowerPoint, Excel, (MS Access is Optional) - Available at academic prices from HCC Bookstore.

Evaluation - is primarily based on projects and exams. You will have to complete Microsoft Office Software Application Projects and Internet based projects. You will be evaluated according to whether or not you can demonstrate proficiency in using software applications. All projects, tutorials and homework assignments must be submitted on time. Due dates are clearly posted on the assignments due dates page. Late projects, assignments, quizzes, exams, etc. will NOT be accepted and you will receive a mark of Zero (0)

Class Participation: Students must participate in all must complete text tutorials to be submitted as Private Mail file attachments. Failure to participate and complete tutorials will result in a mark of F* - "F" due to excessive absence.
