Course Description: The focus of this course is to develop financially literate students. It will provide a practical introduction to personal finance and money management by focusing on realistic ways to effectively manage and protect personal assets and maximize financial health and stability. Students will learn how to design a personal budget and learn to make appropriate decisions with regard to savings, investments, insurance, credit protection, estate planning and managing personal assets. Students will evaluate the cost of borrowed money, real estate investments, the effective use of credit, tax implications and the effects the economy has on personal financial decisions. Prerequisite: Eligibility for MTH 085 Required Textbook & Materials: PFIN; Gitman, Joehnk, Billingsley; South-Western Cengage Learning; ISBN: 978-0-538-74365-5 Access code is also required; code is provided with every new copy of the text Course Objectives: 1. An increased understanding of personal finance concepts 2. Understand the importance of personal credit history, and how to monitor their own 3. The development of skills related to financial planning options 4. To critically compare choices related to savings and investment options 5. The ability to evaluate the cost of borrowed money and how to effectively choose between different options for personal debt 6. Legal and financial implications of revolving debt 7. To become competent in utilizing financial periodicals and other sources of information
