There are no synchronous or on-site requirements for this course. This is NOT a self- paced course. Students are required to participate each week in discussions, complete assignments and quizzes and meet all due dates. COMMUNICATION POLICY: I will log on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to answer your questions. Do not hesitate to email me via your WebCT email for this course regarding any questions, concerns, or comments you may have. Please refrain from using the Discussion Area (Bulletin Board) to post questions you have directly for me. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to Business surveys the wide and complex range of operations which constitute the contemporary United States business scene. The latest business theories, as well as brief historical backgrounds, complete this overview of the way today’s business community provides goods and services within the legal, ethical, and economic framework of the United States. No prerequisites; 3 semester hoursTEXT: Understanding Business, Nickels, McHugh & McHugh McGraw-Hill Publishing 8th edition COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. To provide the student with an understanding of the nature and scope of business operations 2. To familiarize the student with the responsibilities of business in our society 3. To develop a vocabulary of business terms 4. To provide the student with general information about business that will assist him/her in selecting a career METHODS OF TESTING AND EVALUATION: Students will be evaluated on the basis of attendance (weekly discussion), participation (including any written assignments), three exams, and a final exam. STUDENT EVALUATION: Three, one-hour exams and one final exam are scheduled. Hour exam dates are listed on the course calendar. Weekly on-line chapter quizzes are due each Sunday. For all reports and assignments specific guidelines, criteria and procedures are listed with each assignment Three hour exams 30% Final exam 15% Entrepreneur Interview Report 10% Assignments 15% Class discussion participation 15% On line Quizzes 15% Entrepreneur Interview Report: Students are required to interview an entrepreneur of their choice and to write a report of the interview. Specific guidelines and requirements of the interview as well as the written report .
ATTENDANCE AND CLASS PARTICIPATION: Attendance will be recorded from participation in the weekly discussions. Students must participate in weekly discussions by posting on the bulletin board, 3 times each week on 2 different days in order to be given credit for "attending class" that week. All reading, assignments, quizzes and exams are required. Failure to participate could result in assigning an "AW" (administrative withdrawal). Discussion question comments are due by Friday (which requires that you first post your comments and then respond to (2) two other classmates). Discussion is tracked and counts as attendance/ participation in class. It is worth 15% of your grade.
