Logging in to WebCT
The "Course Login " link is the gateway to your WebCT courses.
At the WebCT Log In screen, enter your Username (aka cscharmann890) and your Account password, which is the same as your username until you change it. Your username and password are derived of the following: the first initial of your first name + your full last name (leave out hyphens were applicable) + the last three (3) digits of your Student ID number.
This is the same convention for your "myPortal" account (email and college communications). If you have a hyphenated name, leave out the hyphen.
For example: Mary Johnson-Fitzgerald with an ID of 123456789 will have the following portal (email) and WebCT username: mjohnsonfitzgerald789
If you do not know, or have forgotten your account username or password, please contact the DLHELP Team for Support at 413-552-2124 or email at dlhelp@hcc.mass.edu.
If you are immediately returned to the login screen without an error message -or- if you get some type of "Access Denied" or "Forbidden" error message:
- Run the WebCT Browser Tune-up to ensure that your browser is supported and configured correctly.
- Download and run a spyware detection tool, such as Spybot Search and Destroy or LavaSoft's Ad-Aware. Spyware utilities can often get onto your computer without your realizing what's happening. Many wreak havoc with web browsers and can keep them from working correctly with complex web sites like WebCT.
- If you have a firewall running, make sure it is configured to allow everything from the following address: http://webtide.hccdl.org
If these two procedures above do not succeed in giving you access, follow the next few steps below...
For Windows Internet Explorer Only:
- Inside of IE, select Tools->Internet Options on the menu bar.
- On the Security Tab: Select the Internet icon, then select the Custom Level button below. Scroll down to the item Userdata persistence under the Miscellaneous heading and make sure it is enabled. Scroll further down to Active scripting under the Scripting heading and make sure it is enabled. Select the OK button so save your security settings.
- On the Advanced tab, scroll down to Show friendly HTTP error messages under the Browsing heading, and deselect the option. If you have Sun's Java plug-in installed (you'll see a Java (Sun) heading in the list on the Advanced tab), then disable Microsoft's Java by deselecting all options under the Microsoft VM heading.
- Click the OK button and try accessing WebCT again.
- Uninstall any special browser add-ons or toolbars that you may have installed. Many of these add-on products modify the browser in ways that make it incompatible with WebCT. The only supported configuration is a clean install of a browser listed on the WebCT Browser Readiness Check page.
- Switch browsers. If you are running Internet Explorer, try Netscape, or vice-versa. Make sure you try a version that is supported by WebCT. If the other browser works, then you know for certain that the problem is related to your original web browser. At this point, you can attempt to reinstall your original browser (Netscape only) or upgrade it to the latest supported version. Be aware, however, that upgrading may not fix every problem, and unfortunately, there is no way to reinstall Internet Explorer on a Windows PC without reinstalling your whole operating system.
If you receive an "Incorrect Username or Password" message:
- Make certain that there are no spaces within, preceding or following the entries in the WebCT Account username and WebCT Account password fields.
- If all else fails, contact the dlhelp at 413-552-2124 or email them at dlhelp@hcc.mass.edu for further assistance. Once you successfully log on to WebCT, you should see a list of WebCT courses for which you have an association as a designer or student.
- Click on the hyperlink of the course that you would like to access.
