AOL users of WebCT
If
you use America Online (AOL) for web access, you will need to use
AOL version 4.0 or higher along with Internet Explorer version 5.0
or higher. WebCT does not recommend using earlier versions of these
browsers because many WebCT features will not work with these older
products.
Even
though WebCT has been tested and verified to work with the AOL browser
(it is actaully a modified IE browser), problems sometimes do occur.
If you do encounter a problem, please follow the directions below.
DO NOT USE THE AOL
BROWSER. Connect with AOL
the way you normally do, but then minimize it and use the Internet
Explorer browser instead. AOL uses customized versions of Internet
Explorer. You will have problems unless you install the full blown
version of Internet Explorer.
For
best results, perform the following steps:
1. Connect to the Internet using AOL version 4.0 or higher.
2. Open a private chat within AOL or set your AOL preferences to
check mail every 10 minutes (not necessary, but this allows the
AOL client to remain open without messages asking you if you wish
to disconnect once you minimize AOL).
3. Minimize the AOL session.
4. Launch a recommended browser…IE 5.0 or above...or…Netscape 7.0.
If you do not have either of these installed, they can be downloaded
free from their websites. Make sure this browser is “tuned-up”.
This can be done by going to the main
E-institute homepage at http://webtide.hccdl.org and clicking on Browser Tuneup on the right hand side under Technical Support.
